Farmers advised not to burn wheat sticks after harvest

MULTAN: The farmers have been advised not to burn wheat stick after harvest because this practice also destroys the crop-friendly germs in soil.

Dr Dil Bagh Muhammad, the head of Agronomy section of Central Cotton Research Institute (CCRI) Multan, in a statement, said that the growers should the wheat sticks for soil enrichment as they enhanced organic material. He further said that the advice carries two fold benefit including retaining friendly-germs in soil and further soil enrichment through provision of organic material by mixing wheat sticks in it. He said that farmers should utilise Disk Harrow instead of Rotovator to bury the wheat sticks in soil and apply water.

Burying wheat sticks in soil would not only increase organic material but also provide Nitrogen, Phosphorous, and Potash besides micronutrient, he said, adding that it also boosts plant growth and maintains resistance against diseases till crop maturity besides strengthening soil capability to absorb water and retain moisture that result in profitable yield.
