FBR collects Rs Rs208.153m tax from marriage halls in 1H of FY 2016-17

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has collected Rs208.153 Million total tax from the marriage halls located within the jurisdiction of the federal capital in first half of the current fiscal year. This amount does not include the amount paid or to be paid by taxpayer under sales tax/ CTO or normal income tax.

Some 156 marriage halls, hotels, caterers and event managers are situated in the jurisdiction of the federal capital and out of them some 140 have responded positively to the orders of FBR regarding submission of their tax returns whereas some 16 have shown ignorance towards the repeated show cause notices served by the FBR.

FBR collects tax from marriage halls under  heads namely marriage halls own income tax liability; tax collected as withholding agent under section 236 of Income Tax Ordinance 2001 Sales Tax liability.

A well placed source at FBR told Customs Today that Rs 42.329 Million had been collected as tax under withholding agent under section 236 of Income Tax Ordinance 2001 and Rs 165.824 Million collected as Sales Tax on Services. These figures are till the end of December 2016.

The source said that Marriage halls own income tax liability (less advance/ adjustable tax paid during the year) would be paid along with income tax return to be filed by the end of current fiscal year. However, notices for filing of monthly withholding tax statement and Sales Tax return have been issued to the non-filers.

Some 140 marriage halls have filed tax liability in respect of withholding taxes and Sales Tax for the fiscal year 2016-17 till December, 2016. Whereas show cause notices have been issued to some 16 marriage halls for not filing withholding statements or Sales Tax returns, so far.
