ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) recently busted a massive tax fraud. Taxpayers illegally revised their old wealth statements. Consequently, they brought unexplained assets worth PKR 9.41 billion into their declared wealth.

Authorities registered a criminal case under the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2010. Furthermore, officials are actively processing additional cases.

How FBR Data Analytics Uncovered the Tax Fraud

The Directorate General of Intelligence and Investigation (Inland Revenue) unearthed this massive fraud. They conducted a detailed analysis of the FBR database. Pakistan Revenue Automation Limited (PRAL) supported this extensive data sweep.

Consequently, the algorithms identified 85 taxpayers. These individuals revised their wealth statements for tax years 2014 to 2019. They made these illegal revisions between March 2025 and June 2026. Specifically, they inserted previously undeclared cash, physical gold, prize bonds, properties, and business capital.

The law strictly prohibits this practice. Under the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001, section 116(3), taxpayers cannot revise a wealth statement after five years from the original return’s due date. However, every identified revision occurred well beyond this legal limit.

The Lahore Case Study

The Directorate in Lahore registered one highly significant case. A local taxpayer revised his 2015 wealth statement in May 2026. He inserted fictitious funds totaling PKR 102.8 million. Next, he carried this exact amount forward through his wealth statements up to the tax year 2025.

Ultimately, he used these funds to justify buying seven properties. These properties cost PKR 64.41 million and were purchased in May and June 2026. During questioning, the taxpayer could not explain the source of these funds. Therefore, the evaded tax in this single case exceeds PKR 46 million.

Crackdown & Future Tracking

Regional Directorates of Intelligence and Investigation (Inland Revenue) launched 48 criminal inquiries across Pakistan. Meanwhile, proceedings for the remaining cases are currently underway. Authorities registered the initial money laundering case against the taxpayer and any involved abettors. They are preparing further cases to bring all perpetrators to justice.

The FBR issued a strict warning. No one will use the tax system to whitewash unexplained wealth.

Moving forward, the FBR will continue utilizing advanced data analytics to track similar manipulation. Anyone involved in such fraud will face the full force of the law, including severe penalties and prosecution.
