ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has decided to scrutinise the tax returns of parliamentarians submitted to the board and Election Commission of Pakistan in order to find differences if any.

Source informed that the FBR will issue notices to the members who will be found involved in filing wrong returns after conducting a comparison, adding that around 23 provincial and national legislators have not submitted their returns to the FBR yet.

The FBR was taking such measures after receiving some written complaints against the legislators in order to bring transparency, the sources claimed, adding that the board will counter check the returns submitted to the ECP by following the rules and regulations for the satisfactions of the complainants. This process would be initiated by third week of October.

According to the report, the legislators, who have not filed returns so far, did not consider their income taxable and due to which they could not file returns on time, they said.

Now, regional officers concerned have been directed to contact the assemble members and guide them about filing the returns, the sources informed. They added that publication of tax directory every year was conditional with the approval of cabinet.

It may be mentioned here that around 120 legislators did not file the returns by the day when tax directory was published and now this number is decreased to 23.
