ISLAMABAD: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Wednesday arrested Anwar Majeed and his son from the Supreme Court’s premises after the two attended the hearing in the fake accounts case.

Prior to their arrest, the court had stated during the hearing – conducted by a three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar – that the court was neither directing nor refraining the FIA to arrest the accused and it is the agency’s discretion to take steps it deems necessary.

The father and son duo are allegedly involved in the Rs36 billion scam with three others. Majeed and his son were asked by the apex court to join the investigation initiated by the federal agency.

A petition by the accused praying upon the court to unfreeze their accounts for disbursement of employee salaries was turned down by the court. The apex court further said that the decision to unfreeze the accounts is the FIA’s decision.

The court also rejected the plea of accused persons’ counsels that they should not be arrested by FIA during the probe.

Postponing the matter pertaining to the constitution of a high-powered JIT, the chief justice said the matter would be considered after Eid holidays. He added that it was former interior minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan who had inducted ISI and MI officers in JITs.

The court further directed authorities to place Ali Kamal Majeed and Mustafa Zulqarnain Majeed on the Exit Control List (ECL).
