LAHORE: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has started investigation in a case pertaining to the import of vehicles in guise of ambulances but being used for commercial purposes.
The FIA wrote letters to Excise and Taxation Departments of all provinces to get details about the vehicles, which are registered as ambulances in order to detain the accused persons.
The investigation was kicked off following a case against commercial vehicles, which revealed that many vehicles imported for non-profit usage are being used for taking profits.
It may mention here that some non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are allowed to import used ambulances for the welfare of public not for profit making, as these vehicles are exempted from the customs duty and other taxes.
But some miscreants are involved in selling of these vehicles in open market causing loss to millions of rupees to national kitty. The FIA sent a list of 59 vehicles which were sold in open market to the Federal Board of Revenue and excise.
The vehicles sold in open market include, Toyota Hiace, Toyota Estima, Nissan Hiace Homi Ambulance, , Toyota High Roof, and Toyota Nova.
