FIA recovers illegal foreign currency, 8 held

PESHAWAR: Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has seized illegal foreign currency worth millions of rupees and arrested eight persons.

The FIA team conducted raid in ‘Chowk Yadgar’ area against illegal business of foreign currency, said FIA Deputy Director Qazi Hameed. He said agency officials conducted raids in the currency exchange market and seized record of ‘Pakistan Currency Exchange’ office in Chowk Yadgar for holding excessive foreign currency and for its alleged involvement in wrongful fluctuation of the dollar.

He said eight employees of Pakistan Currency Exchange were also apprehended during raid for keeping more foreign currency at the exchange than the authorised limit.

He informed that when FIA team conducted raid the currency exchange staffers resisted and did not allow them to enter, adding that with the intervention of police, FIA officials broke the lockers and recovered foreign currency worth Rs 70,000,000. The official said that the amount was so much higher then the authorized limit of Rs 30,000,000, adding the currency and record of the PCE were seized.
