MULTAN: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has started investigations against Customs Inspectors involved in facilitating smuggling and receiving bribe from the smugglers.
Sources said that Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir has ordered a severe crackdown on smuggling nationwide including Multan and one of his subordinate agencies is leading the anti-smuggling campaign as well as action against officers/officials involved in the crime. Similarly, a rigorous crackdown is also being launched in South Punjab against smugglers.
The FIA has recorded the statements of few suspects regarding their involvement in smuggling who accused Customs employee; statements of bank managers keeping accounts of the accused have also been recorded and details of transactions to and from these accounts are also obtained. Inspector Arshad Nadeem deputed at the Multan International Airport has been interrogated regarding the facilitation in smuggling for receiving bribe.
The FIA team has also inquired Airport Security Forces deputed at the Multan International Airport and started investigation against Inspector Arshad Nadeem about involvement of officers/officials of Pakistan Customs in facilitating the smugglers in smuggling of goods against receipt of bribe/illegal gratification. FIA started interrogation against organized smuggling network and verifying that few officials posted their trusted accomplices in anti-smuggling role who were collecting the speed money from different smugglers.
Inspector Arshad Nadeem was asked to clarify his position on constantly in contact with few suspects involved in smuggling of Cell Phones, foreign Currency, Gold and others.
Further Investigations are still under process regarding the facilitation of smuggling and receiving bribe from the smugglers.
