HELSINKI: Power production at Finland’s Olkiluoto 1 nuclear power plant will be stopped for about a week starting from Monday as the plant operator Teollisuuden Voima (TVO) is to replace defective fuel rods in its reactor, the company said on Friday.
TVO said three fuel assemblies out of a total of 500 will be removed and replaced. It added that the defective rods will release some radioactive substances into the reactor water but would not harm the environment.
In a message to the Nordic power exchange Nord Pool, the plant’s operator said it expected the outage to last until midnight of April 16. TVO’s biggest owners include paper companies UPM-Kymmene and Stora Enso as well as utility Fortum.
