Fisheries Dept to spend Rs 165.6m on new seed hatcheries

LAHORE: Punjab Fisheries Department Director General Iftikhar Ahmed Qureshi has said barren lands will be utilised for promotion of fisheries and a comprehensive plan has been devised with a cost of 165.6 million.

Addressing a meeting here on Friday, he said in order to fulfil growing fish seed requirements of the public and private sectors big hatcheries would be established and with a cost of Rs 140 million 60 acre land had been purchased in Bhaseen, Lahore, He said main objective of the project was to provide quality fish seed to fish farmers. He said five nursery units over six acres land each were being set up in Pakpattan, Mandi Bahauddin, Narowal, Chiniot and Nankana Sahib and during the next fiscal year land would also be purchased.

He said through establishment of a large fish seed hatchery and nursery units in five districts, production of additional three million quality fish seed of culturable fish species could be possible as well as problems of fish farmers would also be addressed.

Iftikhar Qureshi said under this project, a fish seed hatchery would be established in Rajanpur district with an annual production capacity of up to five million.
