AMSTERDAM: A former narcotics police chief has been jailed for ten years after being convicted of drug smuggling.
Jari Aarnio, who worked for Helsinki Police in Finland, helped a gang import nearly 1,760lbs (800kg) of cannabis from the Netherlands, which was distributed from 2011 to 2012.
The 59-year-old was convicted of 23 crimes, including five that were related to drugs. The district court added he was guilty of official misconduct and aggravated evidence tampering. His crimes included attempting to frame a man as the actual boss of the criminal enterprise.
An accomplice, a local criminal, was also given ten years in jail. Aarnio, a 30 year police veteran, was arrested in 2013 and found guilty in September this year. The court said in a statement the former police chief had ruthlessly abused his position and his actions had endangered public trust in the police. Aarnio had denied all charges.
