Four Maldivians arrested in Sri Lanka for drug smuggling

COLOMBO: Four Maldivians who tried to smuggle three kgs of heroin to Sri Lanka were arrested by the neighouring country’s police on Saturday, Sri Lanka media has reported.

Police Media Spokesperson ASP Ruwan Gunasekara was quoted by a Sri Lankan newspaper who said police arrested a Maldivian couple who tried to smuggle three Kg of heroin outside the airport as a result of a long term investigations with the Maldivian authorities in order to thwart the ongoing narcotics trade between Sri Lanka and Maldives.

The couple had packed the heroin in their bags. After interrogation of the couple, two more Maldivians were arrested.

The Police Spokesman said this was a drug ring run by Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Maldives nationals.

“We have further interrogated these suspects and arrested three more Sri Lankans, including the Sri Lankan ring leader,” he said.

“Our department has been sharing information with the Maldivian authorities and we have been working together to completely destabilise the Maldives-Lanka drug network. We have been successful in arresting a number of Sri Lankans and Maldivians involved in this network,” he said.
