PARIS: Carrefour, the world’s second largest retailer group, saw its sales rise by 4.2 percent over the third quarter this year from the same period a year earlier, according to the company’s press release on Friday.
The company cited boosted sales in Latin American markets as the reason for the increase.
From July to September, Carrefour’s sales stood at 21.5 billion euros (24.4 billion U.S. dollars), due to an “accelerating organic growth in Europe, notably in Spain and Italy, and excellent performance in Latin America”.
Sales in Latin American countries jumped by 16 percent to 12 billion euros, pulled higher by strong demand in Brazil, the group’s second main market, where it reported a 12.2-percent rise in sales despite a challenging business climate, the group said in its quarterly financial report.
In France, which accounts 40 percent of Carrefour’s turnover, the retailer reported “an uninterrupted growth for over three years” with a 1.6-percent increase in sales, while demand in Europe jumped by 3.5 percent thanks to sales in Spain and Italy, the French group’s data showed.
“In a context of slowing consumption,” Carrefour sold 10.6 percent less in China and pledged to roll out its action plan in the country. In Asia, sales were down by 7.0 percent over the third quarter of the year.
