LISBON: Forecourts at supermarkets have cut the cost of diesel by half a cent a litre, while unleaded fuel has gone down by one cent. Prices at branded fuel stations have meanwhile been cut by an additional 0.5 cents a litre for both types of fuel. This latest decrease comes a week after diesel prices fell by 3.5 cents a litre, while unleaded petrol was reduced by 2.5 cents.
According to a latest report from Brussels on fuel prices across the European Union, the average price of unleaded 95 petrol in Portugal is the sixth most expensive in the EU after taxes.
Diesel is slightly more competitive, and ranks as the ninth costliest in the 28 member-state Union. Once taxes levied on fuels by the government are removed, the amount charged by Portuguese fuel retailers drops considerably. Diesel falls to 18th on the list before taxes, while unleaded petrol drops to 11th on the rankings.
