LISBON: The general cargo ship Levant Horizon ran aground on Tagus River in Lisbon, Portugal. The vessel was leaving the port, but left the shipping way after navigation error and mistake of the navigation officer. The vessel stuck hardly at the mud shallow near Oieras municipality and was not able to refloat by own power. The accident was reported to the local authorities and at the scene were sent two tugs, which towed the general cargo ship Levant Horizon to safe depth. There was no reported damages to the hull of the vessel and no water ingress, but ship was ordered to return Lisbon for special survey and safety inspection.
There were no injured people and no water pollution during the grounding of the general cargo ship Levant Horizon. The investigation for the root cause is under way, but according to preliminary information, the grounding happened after navigation mistake of the officer. The vessel was proceeding to leave the port with pilot on board, but the whole responsibility is carried by the navigation officer and Master.
The general cargo ship Levant Horizon (IMO: 9126467) has overall length of 122.00 m, moulded beam of 19.00 m and maximum draft of 5.50 m. The deadweight of the vessel is 6,917 DWT and the gross tonnage is 5,712 GRT. The ship was built in 1997 by Selah Shipyard in Istanbul, Turkey. Interesting fact was that the ship was renamed from Madeirense 3 to Levant Horizon just one day ago in Port of Lisbon.
