WASHINGTON: A Georgia Ports Authority police officer and police vehicle went into the Savannah River at Georgia Ports Authority’s Ocean Terminal just after 2 p.m. Monday, Ports Authority Spokesman Robert Morris said.
The officer was able to escape the river, though the means of the escape are not known at this time, Morris said. The officer was examined by emergency medical services at the scene and was transported to Candler Hospital. Morris said the officer was in good condition and is not expected to have sustaned any serious injuries.
Savannah-Chatham police’s Dive team and Savannah Fire’s Marine unit were initially called to the scene, but the officer was already out of the water by the time the units responded. Georgia Ports is conducting an ongoing internal investigation to determine the cause of the accident. Check savannahnow.com for updates as more information is released.
