German experts, UAF scientists to work together on cotton

FAISALABAD: German experts and scientists of University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) will work together on cotton under the project water footprints of cotton textile industry.

A 20-member delegation of German experts called on UAF Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan on Thursday and discussed the area of mutual interest. All deans and directors of UAF were present on the occasion.

Dr Iqrar A Khan said that collaborated work would bring tangible results to resolve the problems facing the industry and cotton. He said the UAF was having close linkages with the German institutions and the ties would be further strengthened with the project.

Talking about the UAF, he said the UAF had developed a short duration of cotton PB 896 which was under trial and it would prove best variety that would be machine picked.

He said the university was making all out efforts to address the problems of the farming community and industry.  He said the agriculture was a backbone of our economy which was directly linked to poverty alleviation, therefore, it was pre-requisite to equip the farming community with modern techniques and trends to make the sector profitable and sustainable.  He said the UAF had so far produced more than 67,000 graduates and 1400 PhDs. The university had introduced 48 demand driven new degree programmes, keeping in view the need of the modern era, he added. He said the current enrollment in the University had touched 25000.
