BERLIN: German industrial output fell in February, following a downwardly revised increase in the previous month, official data showed on Wednesday.

In February, production of German industrial sector declined by 0.5 percent month on month, said German federal statistics office Destatis. It also revised down the production growth in January to 2.3 percent.

Within the industrial sectors, only construction reported a monthly growth of 1.3 percent. This was due to mild winter weather, according to Destatis.

Production in manufacturing and energy sectors dropped by 0.5 percent and 1.8 percent respectively.

“Industrial production has become a kind of problem child over the last months,” said Carsten Brzeski, chief economist at ING DiBa bank.

“Despite tentative signs of stabilization, industrial production has stagnated for a long while,” he added.

A subdued global recovery weighs on the German industry. Most months in the second half of 2015 saw drops in new orders. In February, new orders received by German manufacturing factories declined by 1.2 percent, hindered by weak demand from abroad, especially from the euro zone.
