Speaking before the meeting German Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke positively about a Brexit deal being agreed soon, despite preparing her country for a no deal.

Tory MEP David Campbell Bannerman was asked on Channel 4 News whether the EU is “getting its head around no deal” and whether it is “becoming for them a self-fulfilling prophecy.”

Mr Campbell Bannerman replied: “I think it is, I don’t think it has been to date if you speak to German industry, they haven’t quite got it yet.

“We are their largest single customer, the largest in the world, bigger than America or China or India.”

The Channel 4 News presenter Matt Frei interrupted asking whether the German’s were beginning to say “good riddance” and back a no deal.

The Tory MEP replied: “They want a deal, of course, 10 percent tariffs on BMW, or all these cars or Siemens products, is not good for German industry.
