BERLIN: Germany imported 15 percent more natural gas last year than in 2016 and paid 27 percent more as oil-linked gas prices were buoyed by higher underlying crude, data from statistics office BAFA showed. The gas import bill in the 12 months rose to 22.6 billion euros ($27.8 billion) on volume of 4,778,136 terajoules (TJ)*.
Germany mainly imports gas from Russia, Norway, the Netherlands, Britain and Denmark.
BAFA no longer provides a breakdown of supply from each country, but Russia is the top supplier by far. Russia’s Gazprom said on Jan. 3 that it had shipped 53.4 billion cubic metres to Germany. Converted to terajoules that would constitute 39.3 percent of the total.
