Germany’s exports rise for second straight month in February

BERLIN: Germany’s exports rose for the second straight month in February thanks to improving world economy, data from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) showed.

Exports totaled 104.9 billion Euros (111.4 billion U.S. dollars) in February, rising by 0.8 percent month-on-month, slower than January’s 2.4 percent increase, still beating economists’ estimation.

Imports amounted to 83.8 billion Euros, dropping by 1.6 percent, reversing January’s 2.8 percent increase.

The foreign trade balance showed a surplus of 19.9 billion Euros in February, 100 million Euros higher than February 2016.

On a yearly basis, Germany’s exports rose 3.1 percent, down from 11.7 percent in January, while imports added 3.7 percent versus 11.4 percent a month ago.

In February, Germany exported 61.2 billion Euros to the European Union countries and imported 54.7 billion Euros from them, rising by 2.9 percent und 2.6 percent year on year, respectively.
