KATHMANDU: Payment solution company GI Technology has tied up with Prabhu Money Transfer of Nepal and RBL Bank to offer Indo-Nepal remittance services for the Nepalese diaspora in India.
This tie-up will facilitate the migrants in India to remit money back home in Nepal instantly, said Ramu Ramaswamy, Managing Director, GI Technology. They can now remit money in over 90,000 agents (Smart Shops) situated across the country, which will be transferred to Prabhu Bank in Nepal through the Maharashtra-headquartered RBL Bank. This will also help Prabhu Money Transfer to widen its reach in India through GI Technology’s network in the country.
There are roughly five million Nepalese living in India. In 2013-14, Nepalese migrants in India remitted over $400 million to their home country through official channels. However, it accounts for only 8.5 per cent of the total remittance into the country, as majority of migrants opt for informal channels.
According to Ramaswamy, many Nepalis here choose illegal means either because they are not aware of formal channels as it involves meticulous formalities which are time consuming.
