EUROPE: If you’ve ever tried to see the ISS with the naked eye, you know you only have a brief window before it zips out of view, a speeding pinpoint of light against the darkness of space. In truth, that tiny spot is home to the only humans who are now living in space.
NASA published a photo of the global Space Station flying over the face of the full moon on August 2.
Though it looks like the ISS is right on top of the celestial body, the two are actually a great distance from one another.
There are now six crew members on board the ISS, which orbits some 300 miles above Earth. The ISS, on the other hand, is just a short 250 miles (400 km) away. They just look as though they are close together because of their relative positioning.
Now a crew of 6 works at the worldwide Space Station.
At the time the photo was taken, the station was traveling at approximately 5 miles per second.
Now onboard the ISS are NASA astronauts Scott Kelly and Kjell Lindgren; Russian Cosmonauts Gennady Padalka, Mikhail Kornienko, Oleg Kononenko, and Japanese astronaut Kimiya Yui.
