NEW YORK: The Association for Computing Machinery has quadruped the prize money for the A.M. Turing Award to $1 million, which are often called the Nobel Prize of computer science.

The Association for Computing Machinery is a professional organization that manages these awards. These awards are intended to elevate the prominence and recognition of computer science and also celebrate the deeper side of computing.

Explaining this, Alexander L. Wolf, president of ACM, said that these awards are given to the “true pioneers” who are fundamental contributors to the science and technology of computing. The prize money for these awards is funded by Google and Intel.

Wolf, a professor in the department of computing at Imperial College London, said, “The Turing Award is now funded at the monetary level of the world’s most prestigious cultural and scientific awards and prizes”.

Since 2007, Google and Intel have been giving out $250,000 for the award. But this year, Google is quadrupling its award prize for the A.M. Turing Award from $250,000 to $1 million.

The awards are given with a view to recognize an individual who has significantly contributed to the computing sector. These awards are held between the months of February and March.
