LONDON: When Internet era came and people wanted to browse websites and access their social media accounts and keep in touch with their friends. Then, these messaging applications brought new features, such as the possibility to make voice calls to other users who installed the same applications, or to call landline and mobile numbers.
But there are times when these applications have problems with voice calling, because the calls are lagging or dropping continuously, and in the end, if you need to call a friend urgently, and she/he lives abroad, you will use your mobile phone to make the call. However, calling rates are subject to change and you will be shocked when your monthly bill will be sent to your home. If your plan doesn’t include minutes for international calls, then we don’t advise you to make calls to other countries.
But, let’s go back to messaging applications and VoIP calling. Most of the mobile users have heard of Skype and Google Voice, but, out of habit, they installed Skype because it’s more popular and offers HD quality voice calls. However, while calls from Skype to Skype eat a lot of mobile data, calls from Skype to landline and mobile devices are not that cheap either.
We’ll compare the calling rates of Skype and Google Voice and you’ll understand why Skype isn’t the best option for making VoIP calls. From a total of 12 counties, Skype has lower rates only for Mexico (landline $0.01, mobile $0.035) and Turley (landline $0.37), while in Colombia, both Skype and Google Voice have the same rate (mobile $0.07). However, Google Voice is much more convenient and its rates are raging between $0.01 and $0.15, as opposed to Skype, which charges up to $0.208 (in Jordan, on landline).
