Govt decides to import 500,000 tons of sugar

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Ministry of National Food Security on Friday decided to import 500,000 tons of sugar to control fluctuations in the price of the sugar in the country, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

The ministry stated that, according to deregulation policy, the fluctuations in the price of sugar is fixed according to the requirements of market forces.

The Federal Ministry said that the government has decided to export sugar as excess sugar was produced during the previous season.

The ministry denied such rumors that there is a shortage of sugar in the country as per the requirements.

The ministry explained the decision to import sugar was taken to control the price of sugar and to facilitate the public.

The Federal Ministry said that the production of edible agricultural items depends on the season. The ministry said that it was wrong to join agricultural items with the financial year.

All the agricultural items were already deregulated as per the policy, and no subsidy was approved for the export of sugar.
