MULTAN: Advisor to Prime Minister on Commerce Abdul Razak Dawood has said that all possible resources would be utilised for the revival of the cotton sector.
“Efforts are underway to enhance cotton production and achieve 15 million cotton bales’ target set for next year,” he said while interacting with media during his visit to Cotton Research Institute in Multan on Thursday.
He urged the growers to produce contamination-free cotton in order to fetch better prices from the international market.
Dawood highlighted that many agreements were signed with China in the second phase of free trade during the recent visit of Prime minister Imran Khan, adding that the government was revising the policies with regard to the cotton sector so that maximum sowing could be ensured in the country and growers do not to shift to other crops.
To a question, he said that the government was well aware of the problems faced by the growers and assured that all the issues would be resolved soon.
Cotton Research Institute Director Dr Saghir said that the provincial government was taking appropriate steps to ensure better cotton produce, adding that high temperature and shortage of water were two main factors that reduced the produce.
He said the Punjab government was focused on making available certified cotton seeds, pesticides, training of growers as well as clean cotton picking.
Muhammad Nawaz Sharif University of Agriculture Vice-Chancellor Dr Asif Ali, agriculture officials and growers were also present on the occasion.
