Govt to purchase cotton from growers directly: Minister

No duty tax on import/export of cotton

ISLAMABAD: State Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Aftab Ahmed Shaikh said that the government would directly purchase cotton from the farmers to facilitate them and bring stability in the prices.

He said that farmers and traders could import/export the commodity freely as there is no restriction.

He said that the cotton price was determined by local and international market. Government has not imposed any restriction or duty on import or export of cotton. Intervention price of cotton was determined by Agriculture Price Institute (API) every year, he added.

He said that lower price of cotton was because of low standards and high degree of contamination and trash contents.

Meanwhile, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs, Sheikh Aftab Ahmed said that the work on different coal based power projects was going on rapidly.

He said that new projects would be completed in Tharparkar, Port Qasim and Jamshoro. He said added that as a result of reduction in oil prices at international level, the government reduced the electricity prices by 5.82 rupees per unit to give relief to the masses.
