Govt urged to give power loom sector special relief package

FAISALABAD: The representatives of power looms association has asked the government to announce a special relief package for the sector.

Council of Looms Owners Association (CLOA) President Waheed Khaliq Ramay said this while talking to media. He said that the inputs and cost of production of power loom sector has gone up manifold which has led to crisis situation in this sector.

He pointed out that the slump in the market and declining trend of the cotton fabrics in the international markets also caused serious blow to the power loom sector. He said that over one million workers and at least two lakh families were earning their livelihood from power loom sector which is by and large owned by lower middle class.

He said that power loom sector needs special incentives due to high rates of electricity and Sui gas coupled with a number of levies and taxes. “If remedial measures are not taken on war footing the power loom sector which is backbone of the textile sector could collapse”, he said, adding that such a situation would aggravate unemployment in the country.
