Govts spend Rs14.3b less to tackle natural catastrophes

ISLAMABAD: Despite increasing natural calamities in Pakistan, the federal and provincial governments have reduced spending money to tackle these catastrophes by Rs14.3 billion or 43pc during the current fiscal year as compare to the last year.

According to a summary of the Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP), both the federal and provincial governments have spent Rs18.4 billion to deal with the natural disasters during fiscal year 2014 as compare to Rs32.7 billion it spent during the corresponding period in 2013.

As per details, the federal government spent Rs3.9 billion in year 2014 as against 2013’s Rs15.15 billion. The Sindh government spent Rs1.3 billion in FY 2014 as against Rs 4 billion in 2013. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government also decreased amount from last years’ Rs5.16 billion to Rs 3.02 billion this year. Meanwhile, the Punjab and Balochistan governments spent more money to deal with the disasters as Punjab spent Rs7.37 billion this year against last year’s Rs 6.9 billion and Balochistan spent Rs2.8 billion in 2014 as compared to Rs1.42 billion in 2013.
