KANGAR: The implementation of GST has made a positive impact on the country’s revenue and economy, according to Customs director-general Datuk Seri Khazali Ahmad.
He said the Royal Malaysian Customs Department had so far collected RM27.31 billion in indirect taxes from since the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) from April 1 last year.
It was an increase of RM12.81 billion from the collections made under the old tax system, Sales and Services Tax (SST), he told a press conference held in conjunction with the 79th Customs Directors’ Meeting here today.
Also present were deputy director-general (Operations) Datuk Matrang Suhaili, deputy director-general (Management) Datuk Abdul Rahman Othman, deputy director-general (GST) Datuk Subromaniam Tholasy and deputy director-general (Enforcement) Datuk Zulkifli Yahya.
Khazali said it was too early to assess the GST system as it had only been implemented for a year, but it was found to be positive so far.
“The GST system has successfully stabilised the flow of the country’s economy, there have been no negative signs, and even business owners and companies have been giving excellent cooperation in implementing it.
“This means the level of awareness among business players, as well as the public (on GST) has improved, and they have understood and accepted the system,” he added.
