MELBOURNE: Rockstar Games Grand Theft Auto has been around for over a decade and the game is simply the benchmark that most open-world action games live up to. Whether it’s Sleeping Dogs, Watch Dogs, Assassins Creed and Saints Row, each of these titles tried to offer a different take to the sandbox genre. Some of them did well and some didn’t.
If you want to go back in time and see where it all began, then there is no better time than now. Sony Corp. (ADR) (NYSE: SNE) is offering a week-long sale on classic GTA titles as part of the Spring Fever sale. From Grand Theft Auto III to Grand Theft Auto V as well as the various DLC and PSP spin-off titles. The prices are all around $5 or less, except for GTA V. Now that is what we call a steal.
GTA depicted several eras of our recent history from the 80s to current day. If you want a dose of Miami Vice-inspired gameplay, then go for GTA Vice City. If you preferred the 90s, then there is GTA San Andreas. GTA III and GTA IV were made for present-day, depending on the year it was released in. GTA V is the latest and is currently on sale for the PS3 version for $29.99 and comes with the Great White Cash Card with a savings of $50. On the PS4, the same edition is available for $59.99, which is a saving of $20 from the original price.
We recommend starting from GTA III and play Vice City, San Andreas, GTA IV and GTA V. The spin-offs and DLC could be played with their corresponding titles as well. Sony has put GTA titles on sale previously in flash sales, but this is the one time, you can get all of them for a very reasonable price online. GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas were originally released on the PlayStation 2. You would have to go to your local Gamestop and buy the used discs if you don’t want digital. Bear in mind, the PS3 or the PS4 are not backwards compatible to PS2 titles. The only way to play them would be to get a used PS2 or a used ‘phat’ PS3 that was backwards compatible.
We would recommend the digital editions since they are only a few gigs to download and will work with your PS3. And the best part is that they are only a few dollars. For ten dollars or so, you should be able to get the first four main titles easily. So what are you waiting for, head over to the PlayStation Store right now and grab them while they’re still on sale
