BERLIN: “We used to have a production period from December to March. Over the last 2 years, we grew 42% in production and we created a new cycle. This results in almost a year-round supply, explains Marco Quilo, the president of the avocado committee.
Quilo continues, “We already did some trials in the past years to, for example the Netherlands, however at that point we didn’t have the production ready. This year we really expect to start exporting to Europe. The benefit is the window we are in since we are able to supply the market with our avocados in July and August. There won’t be much supply from other countries, so we are hoping for good prices.”
He expects the export to go through the port of Hamburg or export by air. “There were some restrictions we have to take care of. For example, we had to arrange the logistics and needed the right certification. Now we are ready to export our fresh avocados to Europe, as well as our avocado pasta.”
