Gwadar Customs seizes copper wire, freezers worth Rs 5.4m

KARACHI: The Model Customs Collectorate, Gwadar, has confiscated smuggled copper wire and deep freezers worth Rs 5.4 million, besides arresting four suspects during two actions.

The anti-smuggling staff received information through Gwadar Customs Collector Saeed Akram regarding the smuggling of copper, which was brought into the city a week ago. The wire was being supplied to other cities, causing loss to national exchequer.

Under the supervision of deputy collection, a team comprising Inspectors Sarfraz Junejo, Shah Khan, Safdar Ali and others established checkpoint at exit points of Basol, an area of Gwadar for checking of vehicles.

During checking, the officials signalled a truck to stop for checking that led to the recovery of 300 bundles of imported copper wire. The recovered wire worth Rs 3 million was confiscated after the accused person failed to show documents regarding legal import of the items and arrested two persons.

During another action, a team of Customs Preventive comprising Inspectors Salee, Khan, Shamim Raza, Murtaza Iqbal and others confiscated more than 80 foreign origin deep freezers which were being supplied to other cities.

As per details, the team intercepted a container in its jurisdiction for checking. The officials recovered deep freezers and asked driver to show documents regarding legal import of the goods but he could not produce the same.

Therefore, the officials confiscated the items worth Rs 2.4 million and arrested two accused persons during the raid under the customs laws.
