ISLAMABAD: In response to the growing concern over the illegal use of mobile SIM cards, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has implemented new measures to ensure that SIM cards are properly registered and are not being misused.

With the advent of advanced technologies, Pakistanis can now verify the ownership of SIM cards registered under their names through convenient online methods.

Historically, SIM cards could be acquired without stringent registration processes. This leniency led to an increase in unauthorized activities, prompting the PTA to enforce stricter regulations.

Here’s how to check

Under the updated rules, citizens can check the owner details of their SIM cards by sending an SMS. To verify the name and Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) number associated with a SIM card, users simply need to send the text “MNP” to 667 from their mobile devices. This service is available across all major telecom operators in Pakistan, including Jazz, Warid, Ufone, Zong, and Telenor.

The process eliminates the need for customers to visit network carriers or engage in cumbersome paperwork. Instead, the verification can be conducted swiftly and efficiently through an SMS service.

In addition to the SMS service, several Android applications and software solutions have been developed for online verification of SIM ownership details.

While these apps may not be officially sanctioned by the telecom authority or any government agency, they provide a useful means for users to access the necessary information. However, citizens are advised to exercise caution and verify the credibility of these applications before use.
