HONG KONG: Hong Kong Customs seized 286 iPhone 6 smart phones, worth about HK$1.6 million (US$206,500) during an operation here the other day.
Officers from Hong Kong Customs and the Marine Police here the other night discovered several men at Deep Bay Road loading boxes of goods from the mangroves at the waterfront onto a sampan.
The suspects fled in a speedboat berthed nearby, leaving the smuggled goods behind. Officers seized 11 boxes with 286 iPhone 6 devices. An investigation is underway.
Hong Kong authorities had earlier foiled another suspected case of smuggling smartphones and electronic goods valued at about HK$3 million (US$387,000) by speedboat at Wong Shek Public Pier, Sai Kung, on Jan. 20.
Under the Import and Export Ordinance, any person found guilty of exporting undeclared cargo is liable to a maximum fine of HK$2 million (US$258,000) and seven years in prison.
