PERTH: The iconic Commodore is set to stay in V8 Supercars beyond 2017, when Holden ends its operations in Australia.

The manufacturer has announced its intention to keep the nameplate when it replaces the four-door sedan with an imported model from 2018.

Holden Motorsport on Tuesday confirmed it also plans to keep the Commodore as the brand’s flagship race car, as the introduction of a new generation of supercars looms.

From 2017, the sport will be opened up to new engine and body types, including turbo-charged four- and six-cylinders, and even coupes.

“Racing is an integral part of Holden’s DNA and Commodore is the most successful nameplate in Australian touring car and V8 Supercar history, and we are looking forward to winning races and championships with Commodores in the future,” Holden Motorsport and sponsorship manager Simon McNamara said.

“We have every intention of racing Commodore for many years to come, but obviously we need to keep working with the regulators and ensure the specific program is the right one.”

The Commodore, debuted by the late Peter Brock in 1980, has claimed more than 425 Australian touring car and V8 Supercar championship race wins.

It has also claimed more Bathurst 1000 victories – 22 – than any other model, including a record seven straight from 1999 to 2005.

Red Bull Racing Australia’s Jamie Whincup has taken out the last four V8 Supercar titles behind the wheel of a Commodore.
