TOKYO: The largest automotive recall in history has taken another turn locally, with Honda Australia adding four models and more than 90,000 cars to its tally overnight.

The Japanese manufacturer will contact the owners of 92,274 City, CR-V, Insight and Jazz models to arrange replacement parts for potentially deadly driver’s airbags built by the Japanese Takata Corporation.

Although there are no reports of motorists being injured as a result of faulty airbags in Australia, several people have died and dozens have been injured overseas by shrapnel sent flying by faulty propellant in Takata airbags.

The company has admitted that many of its products are faulty, apologised to customers affected by its airbags, and promised to find out why some of its airbags detonate in an uncontrolled manner.

Honda has recalled around 306,000 cars across seven recalls that form part of the 600,000 or so cars affected locally by the Takata scandal.

A spokeswoman for the manufacturer says customers may have to wait to receive replacement airbags as “there is unfortunately a shortage in sourcing replacement parts”.

Motorists can visit Honda’s customer service website for more information.

The latest recall affects 1298 examples of the Insight hybrid built between 2010 and 2012, 43,743 Jazz hatchbacks made between 2006 and 2012, three Jazz Hybrids built in 2012, 7,737 Honda City sedans assembled between 2009 and 2012 and 39,493 CR-V SUVs built from 2007 to 2011.
