TOKYO: Honda is reportedly planning a two-door “coupe” version of the new 2.0 litre turbocharged Civic Type R. Nothing’s been officially announced as yet, but the internet rumour mill is speculating.
The recent unveilling of the two-door Civic Concept at New York coupled with the news that Honda will finally bring the Type R badge to America sparked rumours that the USA’s version of the Civic Type R will feature a sportier two-door bodystyle.
While a two-door Civic hasn’t been sold on Australian shores in a long while, our American brethren’s fondness for sportier bodystyles means a US-built Civic Coupe is still offered in Honda showrooms in North America.
The UK-built Civic Type R that’s coming to Australia in 2017 will only be built in five-door form.
If the rumours prove correct and Honda is indeed mulling over a two-door Civic Type R, it’s anyone’s guess as to whether it will be sold globally or restricted to North America.
If it does indeed become a reality, these renderings by wild-speed.com give us an idea of what to expect.
The Civic Concept’s sleek silhouette lends itself well to the Type R treatment, with bulging guards, big wheel, big brakes and aggressive bumper designs making it look the part. If Honda’s design department is looking for inspiration, this isn’t a bad place to start.
