Hong Kong Customs enhances consumer protection for tourists

HONG KONG: The Customs and Excise Department (C&ED) is launching an operation codenamed “Thunderbolt” during the May 1 Golden Week period to enhance consumer protection for tourists.

The Head of the Trade Descriptions Investigation Bureau of Customs, Mr Wai Wan-ching, said today (April 30) that the C&ED would conduct patrols at shopping spots for tour groups as well as at dried seafood shops, drugstores and jewellery shops in tourist shopping areas such as Yau Ma Tei, Tsim Sha Tsui, Mong Kok, Wan Chai and Causeway Bay. The C&ED would also remind retail shops and staff of the tourist industry to abide by the Trade Descriptions Ordinance (TDO).

According to the TDO, any trader who adopts unfair trade practices, including making false trade descriptions in relation to goods, misleading omissions, aggressive commercial practices as well as bait and switch, commits an offence. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of $500,000 and imprisonment for five years.

Mr Wai also reminded shoppers to know about the product specifications before purchase, to do price comparisons and to patronise shops with a good reputation.

They should also check carefully the price and unit of quantity before making payment and retain the receipt after purchase.

Members of the public may report suspected violations of the TDO to the C&ED by calling the 24-hour hotline 2545 6182.
