HONG KONG: Hong Kong Customs yesterday (April 6) seized 720 cartons of unmanifested assorted goods from a container with an estimated market value of $1.8 million at the Kwai Chung Customhouse Cargo Examination Compound. Through risk assessment, Customs officers inspected a 20-foot container declared to contain cosmetic cotton arriving in Hong Kong from Japan. After inspection, Customs officers found the assorted goods, including suspected pesticides, suspected pharmaceutical products, personal care products, health foods and drinks and sport shoes, in the container. Investigation is ongoing.
Under the Import and Export Ordinance, any person found guilty of importing or exporting unmanifested cargo is liable to a maximum fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years. Under the Import and Export (General) Regulations, any person found guilty of importing or exporting pesticides or pharmaceutical products without a license is liable to a maximum fine of $500,000 and imprisonment for two years.
