BEIJING: Shares in Shanghai and Hong Kong ended the morning session lower again today as data indicating China’s manufacturing activity had contracted in August compounded concerns about the slowing economy.
Hong Kong’s benchmark Hang Seng Index eased by 0.47 percent, or 101.44 points, to 21,569.14.
The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index dropped by 1.06 percent, or 33.96 points, to 3,172.03 by lunch. However, it recovered after plunging by as much as 4.75 percent at one point.
The Shenzhen Composite Index, which tracks stocks on China’s second exchange, fell by 2.85 percent, or 50.97 points, to 1,739.34.
