HONG KONG: Hong Kong container seaport which is one of the busiest ports in the world, reported 1% year-on-year decrease in cargo handling for the first quarter of 2015. The port operated 68.4 million tons of cargo in Q1 2015, compared to 69.1 million tons an year earlier. The Port of Hong Kong handled 41.9 million tonnes (-3%) of inward cargo and 26.5 million tonnes (+3%) of outward cargo. The containers handled during the period were 4.9 million TEU, which is 7% decrease year-on-year. Moreover the weaker report of the port is defended by the decrease ocean vessel calls, which dropped to 7,360 for the period, or decrease of 1%.
The Port of Hong Kong is deepwater seaport located at South China Sea. The port is one of the busiest container terminals forming a container hub for trade in Asia and Pacific.
