Hong Kong : Hong Kong stocks closed the midday session higher on Thursday, led by gains in oil companies in line with overnight gains on Wall Street, which was also boosted by energy stocks following US President Donald Trump’s decision to quit a nuclear agreement with Iran.
China Shenhua Energy jumped 4.76 per cent to HK$20.20 and Sinopec rose for a fourth session, advancing 2.79 per cent to HK$8.10. CNOOC climbed 3.11 per cent to HK$13.94 and PetroChina gained 2.18 per cent to HK$6.08.
“Low market turnover and the fact that today’s gains were not broad based show that increases in the benchmark are unsustainable,” said Kingston Lin King-ham, director at AMTD securities brokerage.
Sunny Optical Technology (Group) pared earlier gains to trade up 0.35 per cent to HK$142.50. The lens maker announced after market close yesterday that it had shipped 70.848 million units of handset lens in April, up 16.7 per cent from the previous month and 60.9 per cent from a year earlier.
