ISLAMABAD: The ministry of housing and works has planned to launch a mega housing project under which 1,200 flats would be constructed on an area of 140 kanals of government land in the federal capital.

These flats would be constructed in place of 90 out-dated and 55-year old houses at Sector F-6 which were in filthy condition, said an official of ministry of housing and works. He said that a summary of the project has been sent to the prime minister for approval after which the development work would be started.

He added the project could be completed within two years. He said that it was proposed that the ministry will sale 30 percent of total construction while remaining flats would remain with the government.

He said that a land has been given to the Capital Administration and Development Division at Sector G-13 to build a public school for residents while sufficient amount has been given to the Capital Development Authority (CDA) for development work in the sector.

He said under Green Enclave Bahra Kahu Housing Scheme total plots as per the layout plan of the housing scheme were 3244, but after a survey conducted by the Federal Government Employees Housing Foundation through NESPAK, 775 plots were found to be located on deep ravines where it was impossible to develop anything.

He added after the cancellation of deep plots from the layout plan, the private company was responsible for provision of land and development under the court order.

He said that the NESPAK has completed its survey and ratified the project as per rules; however the CDA will finally give the permission to start development work there.

He said the government was committed to take appropriate action in order to promote, protect and ensure proper realization of provision of adequate housing for its citizens. He said the ministry has taken very strong decisions during the present tenure keeping in view the continuously deteriorated situation of housing sector in the country due to non-implementation of policies of past governments.

He said that the government will review various measures and policies formulated in the past in order to come up with such policy measures which are pragmatic and implementable for housing sector. The emphasis of the government would be to focus on the fundamental requirements of creating a favourable and conducive environment in the country, and to promote and facilitate the housing sector, he added.

The official said the government resolves to evolve, implement and support such policy measures that would ensure adequate housing to all its citizens through proper planning and management, incentives and motivations. He said the government will ensure that a proper coordinating and monitoring mechanism is set up at the federal level within the ministry of housing and works.

He said that the Federal Government Employees Housing Foundation was efficiently working to eradicate shelterlessness for federal government employees serving and retired and for other specified groups of people.
