SYDNEY: HTC has selected Cher Wang as CEO while current CEO Peter Chou has handed over a new role of overseeing future product development.

“As an entrepreneur at heart, I am excited to see so many new opportunities, and I am honoured to accept this opportunity to help shape the next stage of HTC’s development,” said Cher Wang in a statement.

“In his time as CEO, Peter Chou oversaw the successful transition of HTC from a handheld device manufacture for other brands to a global branded company. In his new executive role as head of the HTC Future Development Lab, Mr Chou will be instrumental in identifying future growth opportunities for the Company.” She added

The move follows HTC’s slow decline over the last few years, though the company has shown signs of recovery in the last quarter.

While the move may seem like a surprising move for the company, Wang has been getting more involved with the company’s business decisions in the last few years, leaving Chou to focus on products a move which was set in motion as far back as two years ago.

With Wang’s role now formalized, this will leave Chou free to work on new devices, such as the virtual-reality headset, the HTC Vive, or more lifestyle products such as the HTC Re camera.
