MANCHESTER: The UK government’s recently-concluded investigation into Chinese firm Huawei’s that Huawei does not pose a threat to the UK’s security; and specifically that “there were no major concerns about the independent operation of HCSEC.”
The report said that ‘Cyber Security Evaluation Centre’ (CSEC) in the country has assuaged the concerns raised about Huawei being a possible security threat for western governments.
The investigation was carried out by the Huawei Oversight Board. It has been found that Huawei does not pose a threat to the UK’s security; and specifically that “there were no major concerns about the independent operation of HCSEC.”
During the investigation of the HCSEC, staff clearances inside Huawei’s center in the UK were reviewed, along with an assessment of the processes for budgeting and assigning bonuses from Huawei. The investigators have found that the HCSEC is sufficiently independent from the rest of Huawei.
According to an audit by Ernst & Young, there are “no major concerns” about the way Huawei is running the CSEC in the UK.
As such, the investigators have concluded that the investigation of the HCSEC has “sufficiently mitigated” any possible risks to UK national security from Huawei’s involvement in the UK’s critical networks.
Prior to the results of the UK investigation, a number of western governments had expressed concerns that Huawei could be performing surveillance for the Chinese authorities. The concerns have led to the ban of the Huawei hardware in some countries; with investigations having been initiated into whether Huawei hardware has been compromised.
