HOG KONG: Resistance is futile, says Israeli professor Yuval Noah Harari. The long-term trend is away from “natural” lifestyles, away from emotions and fallibility, away from humanistic values.
We are Borg — or, at least, we will be the famed “Star Trek” cyborgs within the next century or two.
“I think it is likely in the next 200 years or so homo sapiens will upgrade themselves into some idea of a divine being, either through biological manipulation or genetic engineering or by the creation of cyborgs, part-organic, part non-organic,” Harari says.
You won’t be surprised to learn Harari is selling something. He’s the author of “Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind.”
Both an historian and a futurist, Harari says religion — the cause of so much strife in the world down through the years — will die out in the next century. Instead of traditional conceptions of God, we will worship wealthy people, who, thanks to very expensive technology, will be virtually all-powerful.
This much is certain: We are at the very beginnings of the biotechnology revolution, and it has the potential to transform the human species in ways more dramatic than any since we first stood up on two legs. The Bill Gateses and Warren Buffetts of the next 100-plus years will be “amortal” cyborgs that can live forever, Harari says.
