WASHINGTON: Port operator Hutchison Ports has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Ukrainian government for the development of new container terminal facilities in Chornomorsk, Ukraine. The new facilities will be built at the Port of Chornomorsk on the Black Sea. The agreement, which is expected to be finalised in 2017, will represent the first step of the port operator into Ukraine’s maritime market.
Clemence Cheng, managing director of Hutchison Ports Europe, said: “We have long seen the potential for growth in container business in Ukraine and look forward to working together with the Ministry of Infrastructure to realise our shared aim of developing world class port facilities to facilitate trade.” Chornomorsk, which is one of the largest ports in the Black Sea, currently handles various types of cargo including container, general and bulk. The port, which is located in the south-western region of Ukraine 20 km south of the city of Odessa, is connected by rail to the country’s capital Kiev.
