ISLAMABAD: The imported `Tin Packed Powdered Milk’ being sold in the country is checked at port of entry, after which sent for testing to labs analysis in accordance to the Pakistan Standards under which report it can safely be stated hygienic.
These testing labs are working under Pakistan Standard and Quality Controlled Authority (PSQCA) has a complete mechanism for monitoring the quality of the milk products through quarterly inspections of the manufacturing units and market surveillance.
The Government of Pakistan has mandated Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA) under its Act VI of 1996, to formulate standards and check/ monitor the quality of Food and non-food items in the country as per International Guidelines and National Standards, an official of ministry of Science and Technology told APP.
“PSQCA have already involved in the formulation of different products standards locally “Pakistan Standards (PSS)” and also signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with several international organizations like International Organization for Standardization (ISO), International Electro-technical Commission (IEC), International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) and American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), he said.
He informed that presently 109 items are included in the Compulsory Certification Mark Scheme of PSQCA out of which 38 are food items including packaged liquid milk of PSS No. 5344 and powdered milk (whole and skim) of PSS No. 363. PSQCA is monitoring the quality of the powder milk in the country through SRO No. (1)/2008, dated 1st January, 2009, he said.
The official informed that PSQCA tested samples of 28 local manufactures and 550 imported multinational companies Tetra Packed powder milk and found all of them safe and hygienic for human health.
